Carl C & Gertrude Lindegren Hall

The Lindgrens were pioneering researchers at Southern whose yeast reproduction studies opened up what many experts consider a new field of genetics and heredity research. In 1948 Lindgren came to SIU as director of the biological research laboratory, SIU's first unit dedicated soley to research. Also, he organized and was the first chairman of the SIU microbiology department. He retired in 1965. Mrs. Lindgren was her husband's research assistant. She retired in 1968 and died last March. At one time, she was credited with isolating more yeast strains than any other living researcher.
